The Lonesome Rebel

February 20, 2011

The lonesome rebel
Who tried us to tell
About George Orwell
Moneys evil spell
The corporate cartel
War profits from hell

A poetic marvel
An unread novel
Will the freedom bell
From his prison cell
Be his death knell?
And final farewell?

The will of the people
A life long struggle
Nowhere to travel
And never be able
To fight and repel
The highest level

We are not equal
They are not legal
But they will quell
And try to dispel
And they will expel
Dissent will be fatal

The freedom noel
It may be sung well
Will not compel
Resonate natural
Will not propel
Not become real

It is not that simple
Dreams will unravel
Protests will be mental

Is justice a dream
And freedom a promise
Never to be fulfilled?

Is hope a tool
To bear reality?
And maintain sanity?

Are self-esteem
Dignity and pride
Still relevant?

Is dedication
Is trying again
Again and again
Being unrelenting
And never give up
A way of life?

Being determined
Being unwavering
Being unshakable

We shall overcome
We shall overcome
We shall overcome someday
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe
That we shall overcome someday

For Bradley Manning, who is imprisoned in Quantico in harsh conditions and who has all my sympathies and respect.
