I have a personal affiliation to Mali, because as many other Western musicians I admired the sophisticated polyrhythms of Mali’s djembe folas and the poetic stories that the griots were telling and singing. I have a few djembes at home and every now and then try to dabble in percussion. I never will reach any kind of proficiency but my amateurish efforts at least help me to appreciate the great artistry and finesse of Mali’s musicians.
This was one of the treasure troves of world music and its destruction is an appalling crime and a tragic cultural loss for whole humanity.
